If a phone charging connector gets a friendly name like Type-C, you might expect industrial connectors to have equally friendly names. They do not. The part in this story is called 1TGB100052A1650, and despite the unpronounceable name, it quietly keeps a lot of industrial equipment running.
A Small but Critical Part
The part is a crimped contact used in ABB industrial switchgear products. Functionally, it works a bit like a USB connector, but for much bigger and more powerful equipment. It connects ABB low and medium voltage switchgear to the busbar, the main conductor that distributes power through the system.
To see why it matters, picture the system. Switchgear is the equipment that controls and distributes electrical power in industrial facilities. The busbar is the backbone that carries that power, and the crimped contact is the physical link between the two. As with so many industrial components, these contacts are still manufactured in China. We found Chinese manufacturers producing this exact part, and we sourced it for the customer.
It is worth saying what we did not find. This was not a leftover warehouse of old stock. We found active manufacturers producing the part today, which matters for any customer who will need the same contact again in the future. China's manufacturing base is broad enough that production of a component can continue there long after the original brand has moved on to a new design.
The pricing made the search even more worthwhile. The contacts we found were several times cheaper than what legacy distributors charge for the same discontinued part. The customer kept their existing switchgear, avoided a full system replacement, and paid a fraction of the expected cost.
The Takeaway for Buyers
A discontinued part is not the same thing as an unavailable part. Manufacturers stop production for their own reasons, but the installed base of equipment keeps running for years, and somewhere in China's vast manufacturing network, someone is often still making what you need.
