An Alibaba sourcing agent runs the China side of an order you found on Alibaba. If you are here, you already know what Alibaba is. But a sourcing agent is separate and not part of Alibaba. You can pick the product yourself and even agree on a price. However, there are still cases where you might need a sourcing agent to handle your supply chain. In this blog post I will explain whether you really need an Alibaba sourcing agent or not, and why.
Alibaba sourcing agent at a glance
| No Agent Needed | You Need a Sourcing Agent | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it fits | A generic product and an order under about $3,000 | A custom, technical, or large order |
| What gets checked | Seller photos, chat, and a sample you receive | Supplier, product, and entire procedure management. |
| What you pay the agent | Nothing | 2 to 10 percent of order value, or a flat fee from $300 |
What an Alibaba sourcing agent does
You might also see Alibaba purchasing agent, or an Alibaba sourcing service. They are practically the same.
Basically what an Alibaba sourcing agent does is to organize the entire export procedure, from research to shipping. The only difference from the regular sourcing job is that clients who ask for an Alibaba sourcing service already have a product and manufacturing in mind and just don't want to come to China to handle it themselves. Or sometimes there are trust issues, so they want third-party inspections.
Where the work begins depends on whether you already found the product or not. If you already found the product and want us to only handle the rest of the sourcing procedures, then the work is straightforward. If you know what you want but haven't decided on the supplier, then we start from the beginning. First, we analyze your specs, what you need, how much, in what quality class, etc. We then shortlist suppliers, ask for the company name on the license, and check whether the shop makes the product or only sells it. A trading company is normal for some generic goods. On a custom or large order we work with the manufacturer directly. I even wrote about this in detail in another blog post: how to tell a factory from a trading company.
The next step is the sample. After the sample is approved, we write a contract with all the specs inside and prepare to place the order.
Before you pay the entire balance, we inspect quantity, spec, and packing in China. Seller photos will not be enough for this, especially if the product is bulky and complex. We go to the factory directly, which I wrote about here: what a pre-shipment inspection actually checks. After all checks are done, we handle the China export documents and hand the cargo to freight.
The full sequence is in how our China sourcing process works.
Alibaba is the marketplace
Alibaba, as you know, is a marketplace, and most of the time it is safe to buy from directly. They have safety measures such as Trade Assurance, which is a platform rule for eligible orders. It is kinda a platform guarantee, but actually there is no real person checking the products at the factory. It protects you from scammers. But if you have a dispute over a small spec issue, then you will probably lose that dispute and get stuck with a defective product.
You can also find sourcing agents on Alibaba, by the way. But whether you work with us or any other sourcing agent, you should get complete info on what the service will include in writing, so you don't get surprise charges later.
You can read this article on how to decide on your sourcing agent: how to choose a China sourcing agent. I wrote it objectively. It will be useful for you to decide.
When an Alibaba sourcing agent is worth the fee
If the product is generic and the order is under about $3,000, buy on Alibaba. English chat, a sample, and platform payment are enough for a lot of those orders. I would rather say that plainly than sell you a fee you do not need. The longer version is in do you need a China sourcing agent.
Hire an Alibaba sourcing agent when the product is custom or technical, or when the order is large enough that a wrong material or a short count is an expensive problem. Email and a listing photo do not catch that. Someone has to see the goods in China before you pay the rest.
Our all-in-one fee is 2 to 10 percent of order value. A flat rate starts from $300 when you only need research or inspection, and a percent of the whole order does not fit. What each price covers is in what a China sourcing agent costs.
Conclusion
Use an Alibaba sourcing agent when the order is custom, technical, or large, and you need the supplier and the goods checked in China before the balance. Use Alibaba yourself on a small generic order.
